Cendol, Sarawak Laksa & Asam Laksa? Jonker88, here we come

More posts of Melaka! Guess where i went some more? After all that satay babi, one needs to work off the fat man.... So after eating that pork from Sun May Hiong, i wanted to walk walk walk (translated shop, shop, shop) ... Hence i dragged Tifa, Ero-Ero and LTC to Jonker Street. Melaka is a really good place to take photos cause there are alot of things that catch my eye. Old architecture, funny shop signs ( this is because we hunted too much, every thing had an anagram, double meaning)
and really interesting things i don't see in KL.

Well, anyway, I saw this sign! Was pretty excited because this is the place they filmed that show staring Richie Ren and Sammi Cheng... Unfortunately, i was the only one excited... no one cud remember the show :(.
After all that satay... i was thirsty... means got MSG somewhere, so let's eat..... CENDOL!!! Guess where we went? Jonker88. It's hard to miss this place ... why? Everyone was queuing to go into this shop. Must be good lah, so we made a bee line here. I cud hear Tifa saying she wants to sit behind etc cause it was stuffy. From the front i thought it was just a small shop but after squeezing the tiny front door and walking along the way... wala..... i saw this at the back of the shop... oooh.... i feel i went back a few decades...

Do you think any of these still works?

The concept here is order your stuff in the front and move your way back to the back with your order. Btw, the place not only sell Cendol ( in different varieties ) but also Asam Laksa, Curry laksa, sarawak laksa... and pineapple tarts....

Ero-Ero and Tifa did the ordering, as usual i am the designated table reserver. I thought we were only going in for Cendol but they came back with two bowls of Cendol
, Asam Laksa and Sarawak Laksa. My eyes popped. It's not very big but i was already very very full from the satay. Or so i thought....

I love the Cendol here. Thick with Gula Melaka, it some how makes it more fragrant. And they really use really fresh coconut here.. mmmmmmm. One of our treasure hunter colleagues, heard us raving about the cendol here, after the Oh-Chien that night, he came back here and had two bowls... Talk about pigging out!

Ah... the sarawak laksa. I thought it was a cross between Asam Laksa & Laksa Johor. Hmm... not bad.. i like.... I also like the Asam Laksa but it never made the pictures because it was a popular dish amongst the four of us. Larkee only order 1 bowl each. Neko pengsan, eat so much. All the yoga give back teacher already.......

It was actually quite an amazing makan day.... I knew that when the organizer said "come back for dinner at 7:30", he meant it in a half hearted way.
  • We snacked in the car a lot since it was a hunt trip- no time for stopping to eat.
  • After our day 1 leg of the tour, dumped our bags and went to Sun May Hiong to eat stay babi
  • Then drive over to jonker street to have Cendol, Asam Laksa and Sarawak Laksa.
  • But wait... there's more, after that we had Popiah, then tasted pineapple tarts
  • Then back to the hotel for fruits and vegetables
  • The out back to eat Oh-Chien...
I am amazed at the people in my company. When it is comes to food, we are crazy, every where i went, i meet my fellow colleagues queuing here and there for the food. And then strolling back to the hotel for another round of food!! hehehe.. some carried on till late at night... Little did we know the food in the next leg of the hunt sucked! Well... That is another post another round :P

How to get to Jonker88? Hehehe, again click KY'S link! Coincidentally, both the places we went to is the same... ah.. Neko does not need to remember addresses then...

Argh.. when can i go melaka again? *drools for cendol*

How do you like your Satay Babi's? Part 2

As you can see, i am back to my malacca write up again. Gotta spread the write ups otherwise i run out of things to write.

While writing this, my feet is aching like no-one's business. This could be the fact that 60% of the time in Singapore i was walking and walking and walking. The bone between my big toe and feet are slightly protruded and as result, will ache if i walk too much.. Dad was going " i - told - you not -to- shop-so-much". After soaking my feet in hot water, still no effect, now i am lying on my tummy, feet up.. a bit better....

Back to satay babi. Well, the melaka trip was a treasure hunt trip from Melaka to Desaru. So afte Desaru, we had to drive past melaka so we forced the driver to stop for second round satay babi. What to do?? he was the one that suggested FULDA was an answer... so must "TIM" him.

This time, we tried the restaurant Ero-Ero and Tifa says is better. Or rather Tifa says is better. Ero-Ero i noticed, eats any satay babi- dun care what shop. No preference. Now, LTC and myself have built an initial taste of satay babi already. So we were ask to compare.

The shop is called Xiong Ji, off Jonker and it is not e
asy to really park here as the lanes are pretty narrow. Quite an unassuming shop. I was greeted by the smell of satay and this guy busy flapping away at the hot stove. Look at his face... so not happy to see the camera. Uncle... when u see me think of the $$ u will make hehehehe.
Wei... never see people burn satay before ah

Now, Ero-Ero tells us this guy is related to the earlier shop owner of Sun May Hiong satay. I spend a good 2 minutes staring at this guy and thinking about the other guy in Sun May Hiong... dun look a like leh. One tall, One fat. Where got resemblance?

Just like in the other shop, once we promptly sat down here came the satay...Isn't the below shot pretty? MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.. You have the usual cucumber and onion as usual.
Here, they are stingy with the sauce, they give you a little bowl and top up for you when you are done. I wanted the big bowl. :( . So how was the sauce comparison? Less pineapply here. I like! More nutty as well :)

Satay wise compared to the first restaurant? Actually... it tasted the same. The blend used, seems familiar to me. Even LTC agrees with me, the satay tastes alike. Tifa ended up very disappointed as she thought we could differentiate
the tastes.
By they way, they dolloped us with the usual satay offals, i believe i tasted chicken for awhile as well. The issue with this is ... it's so tiny you can go on eating and eating and eating and eating .....

The damage count this time around:
Tifa: 24 sticks
Ero-Ero:22 sticks
LTC: 22
Neko: 18 .... i am never improving it seems. This tifa person can really eat satay babi.

Other sites that have reviewed Xiang Ji Satay: (Check out his map too- interesting way of putting maps up )

I am now convincing Otousan to go to Malacca- kekekeke. :) More treasure hunts anyone?

MALACCA- COMPARING YOUR SATAY BABI'S- Day 1 Sun May Hiong

Well... what do you get when you put 4 hungry people together in a car.... we naturally search for food. There are 2 fussy eaters in the car, one who just eats, and one.. who has no idea what he wants. Now fussy eater 1 and the one-who-just-eats, have not eaten Satay babi before so, one has no preference to anything as a base. While fussy eater 2 wants to eat Shop X but then by the time we finished our challenge, Shop X was CLOSED.

Ok- Satay babi- seems to be extremely popular in Melaka. It's just pork marinated in satay marinade, dipped in a peanut and pineapple mixture. We do have pork satay in KL as well but dunno why we said "Melaka", Melaka=pork satay. But Pork satay did originate from Malacca- according to wikipedia and did you know, it is not really easy to find pork satay in KL?? hmm....
So ( a bit of side tracking ), since Shop X was closed, then we proceed to Shop Y.

Day 1 Satay Shop- Sun May HiongSun May Hiong is located off Jonker Walk, in front of a pier and you can see this sign. Now... again side tracking, in this whole row of shops, only this guy is the foodie place. Along the same row is a bereavement care shop, a massage shop ( if i recall ) and then empty shops. So it is pretty hard not to miss this shop with such a big yellow sign on a quiet street.

Ah.... the smell of burnt meat on a rainy saturday makes a cat very happy.... The shop was already packed when we reached and this uncle was already busy burning away to feed the masses in the shop.

The concept of eating satay in melaka is this.

1) You sit down
2) They bring the supporting actors- nasi himpit, cucumber, onions and sauce
3) Then you dont order the number of sticks, they just start putting the cooked meat on your plates and count how many you have eate
n later.

Supporting stars- Sauce, nasi himpit and Cucumbers

Concept very new to me... (El-jakun). Well, here is a shot of the satay all nicely posed by Ero-Ero. Thank you ero-ero.
I grabbed a stick gingerly cos i saw all the pork fat sticking out on the stick.... and dipped into the pineapple/nuts sauce... And stuff the stick into my mouth... Mmmm... very nice, is satay but it is babi.. The pork is nicely marinated with onions, lemongrass, tumeric and tastes as if it has been well marinated- pass - no PORK SMELL. Only thing i dont really like is the pork fat bits which i keep taking out.

Now, sauce wise- i prefer the Kajang satay kind. Thick in peanuts and lesser on the pineapple. First time i tried the sauce, i was a bit apprehensive. Pineapple?? Peanut? It grows on you, this taste. After the next few bites, i am ok. Out of all the people in the team... i ate the MOST sauce. In SMH- they refill your sauce based on that big tub. The old lady serving us was heard mumbling "wah these few kl fella can really eat sauce leh".. [ aiyo, reputation spoiled]

Also something you need to note on Satay babi, compared to the size of kajang satay, satay babi in melaka is smaller portions and easier to get addicted to. It comes in flavor of pork liver, pork, pork intestines etc.. all pork. Naturally, i only like the pork meat and not it's offals.

How do i rate it Satay Babi @ Sun May Hiong a scale of 1-10 (being the best): 7.

So, how many did everyone eat:
Tifa: 22 sticks
Ero-Ero: 18 sticks
LTC: 20
Neko: 15???? Damn. My tummy is too small

Price- about 31.50 including drinks- Cheap...

How to get there?
Sun May Hiong Satay House, 135, Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker St).
Opens : 11am - 6pm (8pm on Saturdays). Closes alternate Tuesdays.
