Wan Hou Steamboat

After seeing KY's post on Wan Hou steamboat, i dragged, i mean requested my family to go to try this out. Can you imagine i have been living in Subang for about almost 10 years and didn't notice this place till KY's post. Really. I am quite hopeless when looking for places to eat within Subang itself.

Anyway, since family is a fan of steamboat since way back, they gleefully agreed. Mind you, in ipoh that used to be a great place to eat steamboat but sadly they have disappeared. Every trip back, my late grandpa used to organize a session at these places. That was such a long time ago!

Wan hou is really opposite Metropolitan college. Right across the road next to a few rows of bkt shops. And it is aircon - but pretty small in terms of shops space. Roughly you can sit about 10 tables of 4. So it's not very big and not too great for large crowds.

The place is clean and very organized. Immediately when i sat down the waiteress from a foreign land quickly brought the menu. You can either choose the set or pick ala-carte. Father was adventurous that day ... he decided ala-carte and it's not a bad choice if you want to be able to order the stuff you like for steamboat. Otherwise - you could just go for the set which has a bit of e
verything.

Could you see my dad grinning behind there...

Now, the hot pot was brought to us and soup started bubbling. The waitresses brough our ala carte order. There are many choices bout our order was of veggie fishball, fishball, PORKBALLS :), prawns ( only given 3 each), dumplings ( these were good ) and fish wrapped with veggie. We had veggie but i did not take many pictures of it.

We had one order of fish dumpling. The stuff @ wan hou is quite nice actually none of those pre-processed stuff you get from some steamboat places. You can tell it's fresh and home made. I must say, the pork balls are to die for. I love this stuff!! I could eat another plate of it on my own. As for the fish stuff in the first picture. Good as well! Again it's fresh and tasty. Soup wise it was a little bit light but once you add in all the stuff it tastes nice and not too peppery for my liking. I didnt find myself thirsty after drinking the soup.

We ordered some bee hoon + emperor noodles to go with this and ater you have boiled everything with the soup. However for 4 persons, you need to order 2 bee hoon sets other wise it is not enough.

Ho A1 Steamboat- Sounds like a SPM result .....

My... what big eyes you have .... said the yam to the prawn

It's about high time i give my makan crew(s) an introduction. What? You think i eat all these food on my own? Good food = good company :) plus you get to eat so much more if you have more people.

I actually have 2 crews. I would like to call Crew 1 pork lovers crew but then i realized Crew 2 are also pork lovers... So- they stay crew 1 and crew 2. Today' it's crew 1 intro as i haven't written up a post with Crew 2 yet.

Crew 1 consists of:
Lil' Bro- yes my own little brother who is a foodie. A rather quiet foodie. He never really says it is good only way you measure his appreciation for food is the number of helpings he takes.

Tifa - yes, the very same tifa of Final Fantasy. She is a BKT lover. However she has sensitive tummy so she is much more particular of food then the rest of the team.

Jiraiya Sama- Tifa's partner in crime. We realized that day he's not into vegetables. *horrors*. He was gleefully dodging vegetables during the ordering only to find out he doesn't like veg! Another pork lover and a super huge fan of Initial D.

Posh ( Mashi )- Oh.. this girl is the ultimate foodie of the team. She has eaten much more and sampled the more unusual stuff compared to the rest of the crew.. In japan, she went wild in the isetan supermarket :) lolz... I was the rather cool one with a polite "eeyieh-kekko desu" to the sales people when offered raw sea urchin..

Becks ( Posh Hubby ) - Another quiet foodie but now warming up to the crew. We just discovered he should be called "rumor king" for some seriously outrageous rumors we heard from him.. lolz

We've been eating together for almost a year so i think this blog post is a big thanks to them as well. Some of the eating sessions kept me sane during my more stressed life in the earlier part of the year. :) thanks guys.

N-E-W-A-Y. Since coming back to KL, i sort of got jelak with western food and Posh has been raving about the steamboat near her house. So we made arrangements to go to Ho A1 Steamboat in Taman Danau Desa. She says the fish slices are to die for.... I want to try the one recommended by Cass next time. As soon as i figure out how to get to Klang!

For those who love fish head- in the day time- Ho A1 actually houses the woon pin fish head noodles. Well, i am not here for fish head noodles...

We ordered plain soup steamboat and called for the "extras" first...
Ah the extra fish and extra dumplings. We cooked the fish first to make the soup more yummy. What do i think about the fish-.. Quite sweet but the skin really freaks me out for some reason...*eeps* The dumpling gets my two paws up..

Anyone wants to impress me next time... just give me a plate of this.. Pork balls!! All of us had round little eyes when this dish came... I don't know why but this is our all time fav for every steamboat we go to.

The soup was a bit tasteless initially but when the fish cooked and more ingredients added- it was getting much more tastier... For those who like garlic, they give you some sauteed garlic in oil to add to your soup. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm ii nioi ( means nice smell in japanes
e)

Good steamboat must have good sauces especially chilli, but this one was quite hot for my liking. I still prefer HoHo's sauce.

Okay, so here is the main plate... Lordy that looks large.................. But actually it is built up by the vegetables underneath it.

Add more stuff into my bowl prease....

Can't remember how much it costs but it was not that expensive and not too cheap. Just middling. I don't mind coming back here again- it is a little bit cleaner and safer than Ho Ho in Sri Petaling. But then. I eat all sorts of steamboat anyway :) This gets my return trip ticket :) More pork balls please!!

Ho Ho Steamboat- Part 2 Sri Petaling Branch

You must think i am nuts to eat steamboat in this weather. But we did!! A bunch of us - Tifa/Ero-Ero, Neko(atashi!!), Neko Lil Bro and Cel went for Ho Ho steamboat dinner last night. I was raving about the pork balls and the Siu Kow in my last outing at the Jalan Ipoh branch - so they decided to go.

The Sri Petaling Branch, i find is more crowded than the Jalan Ipoh one. You are sitting outside of the road there and people are just parking behind you. I
found that a bit disturbing. A point to note to ladies- do not leave your handbag just lying there, if you happen to sit outside, it is very easy for people to snatch your stuff.

That aside- Neko was the first to arrive, so was given the task to order. For 5 persons, i shouted at the waiter.... cos he seemed hard of hearing and i was like tensed from the traffic. No sooner i sat down, the hotpot came. The clear broth steam boat soup- think they only have clear broth

Ho Ho goes with a concept you need to specify how many persons eating, and they will bring you a big plate of stuff consisting of fish noodles ( yuck )
, fishballs, quail eggs! (yum!!), pork balls, fish, prawns, yam(?),sui kow, foo pei, tau foo, tau kan, tau pok, fish stuff rolls and assorted veggie. Stuff like fish balls, pork balls all you get based on the number of persons you ordered for but the rest like the foo pei it is like free for all.. The white patches on top is their famous Sui Kow. It looks like a mountain cause the veggie is all at the bottom. It never fails to make my eyes go big every time i see such a large plate of stuff. It is also accompanied by bee hoon, 2 big yee meen and 5 eggs. Note: Since i am from Ipoh, the ipoh style steamboat used to be accompanied by Wantan meen noodles, which i think tasts superb with a soup that is ladden with sweet stuff inside. Er, why did i say yuck for fish noodle? I find it geli!! Sorry- this is not my favourite though the others seem to love it!
There is an art to lifting the stuff from this plate to the hot pot. And i dont think we mastered it. There were running away fishballs and quail eggs, followed by screams of "EEEEEEEEEEEH"..... when something was dropped. It was the same at the Jalan Ipoh branch. Cel was shaking her head with disbelief when the dinners were starring at our screams of "arrgh- fishball running away".... Everyone agreed that the Porkballs and Sui Kow were great however no seconds were ordered as we had a lot of drinks.

Dump all the noodles in and Boil!

We manage to finish all the noodles and the guys had a great time with egg cooking. There was a running competition going on for who can cook a egg withou
t messing up the whole pot! Not bad for everyone, manage to do it without disgusting the rest.

Not sure what was the above dish, but it was made of soya stuff, it aint tau kan, or tau pok but was extremely tasty.

We were so full that day- dinner was accompanied by many COLD drinks, other assortment of food(another post) sold by other people and good laughter and company. Only thing i dont like about the place is you worry about your purse and bag most of the time which spoils some of the fun as you are on alert who is always behind you. The other grouse is, the place smells a bit. So becareful of that, when you get a whiff of nice soup, it is followed by some foul smell somewhere!!

But do try out this shop or it is related shops. Click Ho Ho to find out more shops.

Ho Ho Steamboat(Pulau Ketam)@ jalan Ipoh

I actually love a good steamboat- so when NY asked me to partner him for steamboat, i was game on friday night. Helps me take my mind off stuff. Furthermore- there were 2 other couples there during the din-din, so that is why he wanted a partner that night ... LOL... Otherwise he becomes a big lamp post.

Well we went to Jalan Ipoh to have our steam boat. Man.... it was actually quite near KL but took us an hour to get there on friday night. And it is right smack of Jalan Ipoh in a old house. Day time it is the Jalan Ipoh Yong Tau Foo, night time it is Ho Ho steamboat.

We ordered Clear soup steam boat and one big plate of stuff. I didnt take a lot of shots in that place cos it was pretty dark and i was pretty pooped!

They had the usual fish noodles, quail eggs ( ooh yummy ), fish ball- we dropped a few down the floor.... Sui Kow ( Second helpings was required), pork balls ( also second helping), foo chook, taufu, more fish, lots of veggies. It comes with some special dipping sauce- of chilli, garlic. The soup was naturally sweet so i didnt put much chilli in it. Actually- we were so full- we didnt even touch the noodles and eggs.

Ho Ho Steamboat has several branches in Kl area and even have a website, which suprised some of us. Steamboat shop with website?? For those who are really curious, check it out: http://www.hohosteamboat.com/index.asp.

According to NY- you should only go to the Sri Petaling branch when you have production issues- LOL. You will have good ideas after a steamboat.

I was never so full after this- but it is not the fattening kind of fullness. Recommended on a cold rainy day and when you want to sit down with close friends and just chat.
