Sanuki Udon @ Taman Bukit Desa

---------------- Warning: This is the Start of Super backlogged Posts----------------
I think Malaysia is a good place to stay and definitely a better place to eat. Before EVERYONE starts throwing brickbats that poor government  and high costs of houses does not definitely make Malaysia a good place to stay... but think about it, we can get practically the whole united nation of food in Malaysia. And we don't have to go very far. Japanese and Korean cuisines are practically as common as our nasi lemak or chicken rice.  And the best bit,  it costs a fraction of a price to get good Japanese food. Aside from Japan though, i never had Japanese food out of Malaysia except Singapore ... however i get the feeling Kushinbo is not entirely classical Japanese food.

I found this place via LL, Masak(x2) and a  few other flogger's blog and have been meaning to try. However, when Mashi wanted me to photo shoot her house and have dinner after ( her house being very close proximity to this area ) this was a perfect way to kill 2 birds with one stone. Also note, the Proprietor, is quite the looker. Tall, dark and reasonably well built as well as super friendly, it's no wonder a lot of the customers are ladies :) ...  I kid you not.

By the way, Sanuki, is a prefecture in Japan famous for Udon and Sanuki serves some versions of Udon that is popular in different parts of Japan. And the origins of Udon came from China by the way.

This is definitely a place that is simple with the simple things in life all ready to settle you down for the day. Like Beer. But heck, we had tea. Everyone was either coughing or suffering from some previous ailments of the tummy. So no beer.  However, if you are lucky enough to be able to take beer, try out their Yaki tori. Variety is not a lot here ... but if you like Chicken Butt, go for it. As you can see, some parts are a favorite in our makan gang.

We decided for appetizers instead and this trio from the ocean was ordered. Frankly, it doesn't look very attractive - especially the middle dish which spawned Phelgm jokes. We have no idea what it is. It's either ... er sotong or some other animal parts we are not aware of.

From left to right, it's Jelly fish, seaweed and scallop wings. And ... the scallop wings was actually nice. I am not sure why if i eat as part of a scallop i will spew ... but this was fine. By the way, i didn't try that white thing. Anyway, while you are busy talking, this is a good appetizer to pop into your mouth and chit chat.

More munch food now, because we thought Udon was not enough... ( BUT actually it was ) ... it's Karaage ... Japanese fried Chicken.  Think this is the best so far i have eaten around town. Crunchy and tender at the same time. And chicken was not ... dry. I hate it if people over fry chicken and lose the tenderness of the chicken, but Sanuki does it pretty well.  In fact so well, we had 2 plates!

Even more munching food, a perennial favorite for Japanese food lovers, Kakiage. Strips of vegetable fried and normally is sweet tasting.  A crowd favorite because we ordered another 1 and i kiasu-ly ordered one in my Cha Cheong Udon later ... Needless to say, at the end of the meal i felt like a giant size Kakiage.

We finally progressed to the Udon.  Don't be fooled that the Udon is small because after stuffing yourself with starters, this is gonna be a pretty carbed out meal.  By the way, this is a pork free place, so every thing is made up of Chicken meat. Alcohol, however is still served.

Mashi's Kare Udon ( Curry Udon ) was first served. With a side of soft boilish egg. The egg will give it a creamy texture once stirred properly. Udon at Sanuki is smooth to the palate and easy to eat. At Sanuki, you can top up your Udon with a soft boiled egg or Karaage or even Kakiage if you like with an extra RM1 or so. ( If i can recall )

One of the rare days, i super photoshop my photos... thanks to poorly behaved flash.... This is a Osaka style Udon, known as Kitsune Udon with Wakame ( Seaweed ). Kitsune actually means Fox in japanese and it's called so because it resembles the shape of a fox ear ( normally ) and brown in color! Made out of soya, this is a sweetish form of tofu ( or like our foo pei ) Those of you who like something more simple or "ching" can try this dish.

I am not sure why lah I ordered Cha Cheong Udon... lah.. It's not that bad, the sauce is thick, but not really spicy, but i was hoping for something like the ones in Esquire Kitchen! But i really like the smooth texture of the noodles. One would think that an Udon so thick will not absorbed the taste of the sauce but no, actually it does.

I am about to pop when i saw the Ebi Tenpura ... this was so so, probably because i was super full by this time. Not to mention i down like 3 glasses of ice cold green tea. Probably need to retry this when i am not so pigged out.

I love the area in which the shop is situated, nice quiet neighborhood and it is nice to see like a few shops in that area open but sounds of laughter floating out from Sanuki. Think we paid less than RM50+ ( Correct or not Becks? ) for 4 Udons, 2 karaages, 2 kakiages, 2 starter dish and cups of tea.

I think i will come back and try the Nabe next time ... But not in this freaky weather.  Oh yes, i asked the waiter if they will have desserts soon. His reply: "Akan datang" :")

P/S: Sanuki sells fresh udon as well, if you feel you are up to the challenge of making home cooked Udon you can buy it from Sanuki Udon.  And get a glimpse of the Proprietor ;)
